You don’t have to be born a blacksmith to be able to make your own knife. Come and learn knife making with an experienced blacksmith. Enjoy four days of the magic of creation and craft your very own knife. The work stages consist of blade forging and heat treating, handle forming with all its fittings and making the sheath, including making your own pitch thread. The course is suitable for both beginners and more experienced hobbyists.

Timetable
The knife making course in an intensive, four day course at our Hanhiniitty workshop in Niinisaari, Puumala. The course will start on Thursday at 10:00 am, and the following days timetable will then be agreed together. The course will be 32 hours altogether.

The Course
I will teach how to make a common Finnish knife (Puukko). On the course we’ll learn all the processes that you have to go through in knife making: forging a blade and tempering, carving a wooden handle and forming the quillons, carving the sheaths wooden last, making tar thread and sewing up the leather sheath. Normally participants will make at least one knife, but some might manage even two. It is possible to continue working also in the evenings. The Gallery of the workshop will act as resting place, with the possibility to make tea and coffee. All course participants will have to bring their own working clothes and it would also be good to have your own earmuffs.

Price
The course costs 480€/ person (inc. VAT 24%). The price includes teaching, machinery use, materials and tea or coffee daily.

Insurance
We will insure you for any damage caused by the organizer of the course. It is still recommended to take out your own personal accident insurance.

Registration
We will take a maximum of six participants for this course in a first come first served bases. I only take six students at a time because I want to guarantee individual teaching and provide participants with happy experiences of learning and achieving.

A more detailed course program and instructions will be sent to those who have registered.

If there is less than four participants, the organizer has the right to cancel the course
